Academic Peer Partners is an academic support program, pairing students who are strong in a subject with students who have asked for help in that subject. A unique feature of the program is that the peers commit to a semester-long partnership, meeting at least one day a week at lunchtime in support of academic progress. This commitment creates trust and fosters responsibility, friendship, as well as role modeling.
2015-2016 School Year
The program is a well utilized academic support choice at B-CC. Over the course of the 2015-2016 school year, informal records show that over 350 students participated in the program. The program’s value to the students is substantiated by the continual growth of the program and the positive comments by the students. Here are a few examples of the impact of the program:
Analah, who wanted to downgrade from Honors to on-level Algebra during Q1 because she had an E in the class, was convinced by her peer partner to try together. At the end of Q1, she had an A in the class.
Max, having spent a year in a Spanish speaking country, wanted to partner with a Spanish-speaking student to keep up with his language facility. He was matched with Emer, an ESOL 3 student who needed help in Algebra. Emer earned a B in Algebra in Q3.
Hannah, struggling with Geometry, met diligently with Caitlin at lunch during Q1-3 and passed the class. Determined to do better, she asked for a second peer partner for Q4. She met with her second peer partner after school while continuing her lunch time meeting with Caitlin, and earned her first ever B on a Geometry test.
A planned improvement for next year is to track academic progress of the students in the partnerships.
